ASH MCALLISTER
Ash McAllister is a writer born in Toronto and now based in Melbourne with her family.
She writes fiction centred on girls and women who are overlooked or constrained, exploring belonging and selfhood within family and social worlds that fail to fully see them.
She holds a PhD in Health Policy from the University of Sydney.
No One Told Her It Would Be Like This is Ash’s debut upmarket historical novel.
Set between 1958 and 1970 in Toronto and Los Angeles, it follows Anastasia, a 1950s housewife who, after years of longing for a child she cannot have, is thrust into motherhood overnight when tragedy leaves her caring for her toddler niece.
Current Work
Femme Ink
Ash is also the founder of Femme Ink, a writing project exploring matrescence, identity, and creative life. Through essays and workshops, she creates space for mothers to write in fragments, returning to creativity alongside their demands of care.
